Where is the cabin located?
We are in the area of Halibut Cove Alaska. This waterfront cabin sits high above the beach on Kachemak Bay. We are in close proximity to Kachemak Bay State Park. A small private beach area is available for use.
How do we get to the cabin?
From Homer Alaska. You can get to Homer by air service from Anchorage or by vehicle. From the Homer Spit the cabin is 8 miles across Kachemak Bay by boat which is the only way to access the property. Their are several water taxi companies you can partner with and arrange round trip transportation to the cabin. This should be scheduled by our customers once you book your stay. The taxi service will drop you off directly on the beach below the cabin. From there you will need to climb four flights of stairs to reach the unit. If you are a local renter and have your own boat you can use our deep water mooring buoy in the bay.
Is the cabin handicap accessible?
Unfortunately due the the stairs leading to the cabin, we are not able to accommodate individuals who require wheelchair access.
Are the owners onsite?
No this a remote location with no one on site. Check in and out are self service. We can be reached by email or phone if questions or issues arise. It is suggested that renter be prepared for changes in environment, weather and other potential challenges as it is an isolated area.
Is the cabin off grid?
Yes for the most part. Their are no stores locally so you'll need to bring your provisions such as food and personal items with you for the duration of your stay from Homer. Electricity is not available however we provide a propane refrigerator with a freezer, propane stove with oven, propane lighting, battery lanterns and lights. A portable cooler is available for use. Water is provided by a flowing stream which is stored and basic filtration is used. You are welcome to bring water for consumption, or drink or boil the filtered stream water for your use. The choice is up to each individual. We do not have wi-fi however cell service is good. You can use your data plan for streaming on your devices. We provide an AM/FM/CD player and a Bluetooth speaker. Cards, puzzles and some games are available too.
Are cooking and dining items provided?
We provide all cooking items such as pots, pans, utensils along with dining dishes, glasses and silverware. Spices and such should be available as well. The cabin is equipped with these item for up to 4 individuals.
Is there a washroom?
The cabin has a shower room with hot and cold water and a sink. This is located in an outbuilding near the cabin. Toilet facilities are an outhouse located 75 feet from the cabin. It is equipped with a composting toilet. Basic personal items such as shampoo, conditioner and soap are provided. Bath towels and wash clothes are provided.
What are the sleeping arrangements?
There is a double bed located in the lower portion of the cabin. The room has a small dresser for storage, a sitting chair, nightstand and a small reading library. A double sofa bed is in the upper portion of the cabin in the living area. Bed lines and extra blankets are provided.
Do you charge for additional guests?
No. The cabin is equipped for four guests. The rate is inclusive for the guest limit of four.
Do your rates increase for peak periods or holiday periods.
No. We understand that your Alaska visit comes with high costs already so we keep our rates level no matter the dates.
Is the cabin heated?
A woodstove is used for heat, We provide the firewood. A temperature controlled propane heater is also used.
Are children and pets welcome?
Yes. Kids and dogs are welcome. Be advised that the cabin is a high bank waterfront unit with steep stairs, decks and walkways. Safety rails and non slip coverings are used, but direct supervision for children and pets is highly recommended at all times they are outdoors. A per night fee may be imposed for dogs.
What is their to do during our stay?
Several outfitters in Homer can provide you fishing charters, wildlife viewing and sightseeing excursions. You may want to consider these activities either before or after returning from your cabin stay. Any of these bookings will require our guests to coordinate themselves. We provide two kayaks and two paddleboards for your use at no additional charge or you can bring yours along with you. Please always use safety gear which is provided while on the water. Getting to Kachemak Bay State Park is a short paddle away where you can hike miles or trails, view many lakes and hike to glaciers.
Is there wildlife in the area?
Being remote and secluded there is always the potential for wildlife to be in the vicinity. Bear are in the area and may be seen on the beach. It is recommended that guests bring bear spray and a noise maker such as a whistle and carry them while hiking or enjoying the outdoors, especially if visiting the state park.
Any other instructions?
The cabin will have a guide book which will set out the rules and additional information. We encourage all guests read through it.
